Nestled in the heart of Grand Rapids at 1180 Walker Ave NW, Westsider Cafe is a cherished local brunch, breakfast, and lunch spot known for its hearty, comforting dishes and warm, inviting atmosphere. From the moment you step inside, the aroma of sizzling bacon and freshly brewed coffee envelops you, setting the stage for a truly satisfying meal experience.
Westsider Cafe expertly crafts a menu that celebrates classic American breakfast and lunch favorites, with delightful twists that keep regulars coming back. Start your day with their signature Westsider Breakfast, where two perfectly cooked eggs come with your choice of savory meats like bacon, ham, kielbasa, or sausage, served alongside grilled redskin potatoes and toast. If you crave something indulgent, the 5th Street buttermilk biscuits smothered in homemade sausage gravy paired with golden-grilled redskins is a must-try, offering a rich, creamy bite that feels like a warm hug on a plate.
The skillets here are a flavor-packed affair — imagine fluffy scrambled eggs mixed with an array of garden-fresh sautéed vegetables and meats, all topped with melted shredded cheese. Favorites like the 3 Skillet loaded with mushrooms, onions, and peppers, or the hearty Irish Skillet with corned beef hash deliver robust, satisfying bites for the hungry diner.
Beyond breakfast, Westsider Cafe doesn’t shy away from unique, lesser-seen offerings like their Dill Pickle Soup — a tangy, savory surprise that has quickly become a local talking point — or classic comfort dishes such as the Kielbasa Reuben Sandwich and the Olive & Swiss Melt Burger, grilled to perfection on rye bread with green olives adding an unexpected punch.
The cafe’s ambiance matches its food — unpretentious, cozy, and bustling with an undercurrent of genuine Midwestern hospitality. Regulars love how accommodating the staff are; reviewers highlight servers like Reilly who skillfully manage large groups with care and attention to dietary needs, all served with a heartfelt smile. The owner herself is known to greet guests with warmth and personal recognition, creating a welcoming vibe that instantly feels like home. Patrons have noted the spot’s clean and tidy dining area and restrooms, which speaks volumes about their commitment to customer comfort and experience.
Customer feedback showcases Westsider as a true Westside staple, with many praising the generous portions and incredible flavors — particularly the expertly cooked potatoes — while also appreciating the fair price point. The only minor quip is patchy phone network coverage inside, but once you taste the food, that inconvenience quickly fades into the background.
Whether you’re indulging in the fluffy Belgian Waffle topped with fresh strawberries, savoring the smoky notes of the Polish Combo Plate, or building your perfect omelette layered with bacon, pulled pork, and onions served alongside home fries and whole wheat toast, Westsider Cafe offers an authentic, soul-satisfying dining experience that lingers long after your last bite.
The waiters are accommodating, the food is yummy and filling. The price point is okay! I recommend the potatoes! But heads up if you use AT&T phone network, there's not a lot of service in there haha. A Westside staple
Went to Grand Rapids for a wedding. We stopped at this little place that was a Google search of "Places to eat near me." Can I say... OMG!! We went to the restaurant for breakfast. I could smell wonderful smells outside... but when you walk in, you are immediately taken aback by the wonderful aroma of bacon. Now, you don't have to eat it to appreciate the smell of it. Anyway... you pass by the kitchen on your left where you can see everyone hard at work preparing and making the food orders. They were just busting the tickets out so effortlessly; such a great team of people working together. We sat at a booth in the corner near a window where we people-watched and could observe the whole restaurant. The servers/wait staff were all smiles and so quick to refill drinks, accommodating requests of other patrons, Let's jump to the menu. Okay, soooo.... I don't know where to start. Everything looked and sounded amazing in the description. It was so hard to choose. I can't remember what I ordered, but you can look at my pictures and show the staff or read and compare. What I ordered was ONE meal. And the rye toast wasn't even pictured. Food portions are amazing! You could split your meal, but I opted to enjoy every single bit!! Pricing for meals is fair for quality, quantity, and flavor!
WE almost didn't come here because there were bad reviews but I am so glad we did! The food was great and the servers were friendly. Clean and tidy dining area and clean bathrooms too. I recommend for sure!
Food was delicious. I got patty melt and wife quiche. And the owner this nice lady. She actually remembered me from 10+ years ago. I used to eat here all the time when on Different shift. I touched she remembered me
Reilly was our server today for our Women’s group brunch- and she was incredible! She handled our seating, orders, allergies, and didn’t miss a single ordered item. The food was great, but the experience is what will keep us coming back and spreading the word to others. Thank you for allowing us to pray, bring fellowship, and accommodating our requests seamlessly with a beautiful smile and kindness displayed the entire time. Thankful for everyone at the Westsider for blessing us today.
This might be the best “classic breakfast” in Grand Rapids. The food is delicious and portion sizes are pretty large. Pictured is the “First Street” with scrambled eggs, sausage links, and white toast. The redskin potatoes might be the best part. YUM! I also love that you can get good Polish food here! The servers are always wonderful. My only complaint about this place is that it is pretty small and there’s a lot of seating crammed in there. I personally hate being in the way and I ALWAYS feel like I’m in the way at this place — especially when we’re waiting inside for a seat. But if you don’t mind tight spaces as much as I do, or if the weather is nice and you don’t mind waiting outside for a table to open up, this is a great place to try!
